Charlie Carter and George Verhagen began building wooden runabouts in a Milkwaukee garage in 1954. Boat building may have started out as a hobby, but Carter and Verhagen soon began selling their boats. In 1956, the partners relocated to Wisconsin, and in 1963, Walter Markham and Glen Nordin became principle owners.
While the company started with its mahogany-planked boats, Carver began manufacturing with fiberglass as its yachts got bigger in the ‘70s and ‘80s. The company gained national recognition as luxury yacht builders.
Carver began producing the Marquis line in 2004, which was a success, but in 2009, Carver Yachts and its parent company, Genmar Holdings, declared bankruptcy, only to later emerge as Marquis Yachts.
